Madeleine Hanna - Volunteer Role, 'Events Management Course Industry Work Placement'
"I first became aware of Pretty 'n' Pink in 2010 through my uncle who was putting together a relay team to take part in the Belfast City Marathon. My aunt had sadly passed away the year before and I thought it would be nice to help raise funds as it was a cause that was close to my family's heart. Our team completed the marathon and we raised a fantastic £4521.28, I was delighted!
"At the same time I was studying for my Foundation Degree in Event Management, which required me to complete a 17 week industry work placement. Having gained a brief overview of the work of the charity as part of my marathon challenge and wanting to learn more about what goes on
behind the scenes of the organisation, I immediately thought of
Pretty 'n' Pink. I was delighted to secure my placement with the team and started with them in the middle of January 2011.
"Throughout my placement I was based at the charity's main office in Belfast City Centre and it gave me a great insight into what goes on behind the scenes of a small charity. My role involved helping with planning events, brainstorming, and general administration such as stock taking. However I was also out and about attending many different events, anything from beauty fairs and wedding events, to spin cycles and community fundraising cheque presentations.
"I was also heavily involved in the recruitment of marathon participants. As I had first-hand experience of what the marathon involved I felt that I was very suited to this role.
"My favourite part of my placement was being involved in the charity's annual gala ball. I got to view different venues, and attend a site visit to Titanic Belfast (which as it turned out was the selected venue), whilst it was still under construction, it was really exciting back at the office once we started to get into the many ideas for the ball.
"I now work full time for a leading global soft drinks brand as a Master Data Specialist, and also continue to volunteer whenever I possibly can.
"I would encourage everyone to sign up to be a volunteer, the people you meet along the way and the stories you hear are so inspirational.
"I am currently in discussions with my uncle as to what we can get up to next year to fundraise so watch this space!"
